Update: experts say "wait"

So we do.

My son shows signs of brain activity beyond what the experts call "brain death". He seems to react minimally to some of the ignominious things the nurses do to him.

Our doctor thinks I witnessed the cause of some unexplained SIDS cases. The only sign anything was wrong was a seizure which consisted of a couple quick arm movements which looked like punches. Having studied my son for two months, I knew something was wrong. Within a couple seconds, his face turned blue. This, I've been told, is a classic symptom of a seizure. Instantaneous bluing of the face is not oxygen deprivation but the brain shutting down the blood flow to the face. The instant I saw blue I picked up the phone within arm's reach and dialed 911. I tried to talk to the 911 operator while giving my son mouth-to-mouth.

It was awful. The EMT's showed up in about fifteen hours (a couple minutes). Before they left the house I heard "full arrest". Nobody should ever have to hear that about their two month old son.

Thank you for all the kind words. I broke down when I read all the wonderful things everyone had to say yesterday.

It figures at least one cowardly worm hiding behind "Anonymous" would stink up the place. Such is the nature of the Internet. I thought it might be worse. Trolls are of such low quality these days.

    Chip,

Thank G-d! You have no idea how many of us are praying for you, and this news is encouraging! Alex is a fighter, and he will show the MD's.

You and Alex and your wife are in our thoughts and prayers, and we await your next update. Please give your wife our love. Kiss Alex for us, and take care of yourselves.

Re the nic jacking? I think you know us well enough to tell who is the real person..and the other? They will get theirs.

All that matters is the baby!

    Love you!

I have to admit, I have no clue whatsoever how to find "the other" so please excuse the obviously empty threat. (And I promised myself not to pay attention to the trolls! Sigh.)

    Hi Chip,

Like so many of us out here, I will keep praying for baby Alex.
Please know that if there is anything we can do for you in addition to praying, we will do what we can.

As a father who spent time with his son in a NICU, I can imagine what you must be going through.
I pray that G-d gives you and you wife the strength you need to get through this difficult time and that a blessing of happiness reaches you very, very soon.

  4. Chip, This is better news than you imagine. The brain is capable of recovery man cannot begin to fathom. Keep talking to him, touching him, encouraging him, singing to him, laughing to him.....day in day out, week in week out.............you'll see

He will come back to you
G-d bless your family and your wife,Pamela

No matter what happens, I'd still wager that your kid will end up better than my autistic loser. We should form a club.

We're all hoping for the best. Didn't you once speculate that you were somehow connected to the whole French king/Mary Magdalene/Sangraal mystery? If that's true, then your son is genetically connected too, which means he may possess the healing powers of the Merovingians in his veins. Either way, he is a magical child.

    My thoughts are with you.

    Chip,
I'm very encouraged by this news. May God bring the best of all these hard moments. My prayers are again for you and your family.
    Rightymouse,
NO autist is a loser. Not at all. Please, don't look at it that way. He or she is your beloved child, a child of God too and, who knows what plans the Lord has for him/her?
    May God bless us all.

Hi Chip: Just after you were at lgf last night (8:56 p.m. est)--just at 9:00 p.m. I stopped and prayed with everyone else. From what you tell us you couldn't have moved faster. You saw something happening and called. So maybe this will be a clue they can use to uncover the cause of SIDs (or some forms of it). It sounds as if something just stopped working and everything else followed that. If they can find what the first thing was they'll know if they can guard against it in the future. In the meantime, I and everyone else continue to keep Alexander in our prayers as well as you and your wife. Rest in G*d right now. Alexander's in the best place on earth for him right now. G*d Bless you, Beagle! :)

    Beagle.....

One prayer has been answered...WE just need ALL of them answered, mind over matter, words to the Big Boy upstairs, BOTH, OR whatever it takes. The community of LGF, (aka Charles Johnson's Blog...:) stands with you. Whether you need strength, shoulder, or anything, WE are there.

You mentioned yesterday, something that the Doctor said that would lead a Father to pick up said Doctor by the lapels of his/her white smock. Is Alexander in Orlando or Gainesville?

Anoles are randy this time of year. I committed coitus interruptus just yesterday in the back yard. It's a big reptile orgy out there.

No change in my son: stable but critical. I'm heading back to the hospital once I get the dogs and cats squared away.

Never take time with your loved ones for granted.

A nice, attractive Muslima RT took care of my son's vent earlier tonight. It's unfortunate that my mind races to all sorts of crimes against humanity while she's being humane."

  32. Hang in there Chip. Babies at that age are more resilient than adults, sometimes. I will keep you in my prayers.

As far as the troll is concerned, out of 130 comments only one was from an idiot troll? You know the old saying, there has to be one in every crowd and if it wasn't for him/her, there would not have been one there living out his/her purpose.

  33. Best of luck to you sir. While I do not believe in a god(s) that "allowed this to happen" or conversely could heal your son, I hope the doctors are able to help him. Tragedy happens every day, and I hope you are able to deal with it in an emotionally stable manner and that you are able to have another child in the future if things do not work out.

I am grateful to see evidence of your keeping your perspective re: the Muslima RT. Still praying and sending vitual cassaroles. Wish I could clean your house for you or something. Extra prayers on this National Day of Prayer.

  35. As the father of a severely brain damaged son named Alexander I have quite a bit of sympathy for what you are going through. My Alex is nineteen now and does a lot more than what the doctors thought he could. Keeping you in my prayers and letting you know that there are people who have been where you are and ready to help in any way you need.
